4 Useful Technologies Made Possible by Computers

4 Useful Technologies Made Possible by Computers By Larry Alton People love to joke about disk drives that were once the size of washing machines. Except it’s not really a joke—it’s true. With a fresh coat of white paint, the RP04 disk drive could easily  infiltrate any laundry room  and blend right in. With a 92MB capacity, you could  almost  store the photos of your dinner you posted to Instagram last night. Today, this technology once considered cutting-edge has become obsolete. Large, clunky, slow machines have been replaced with lightning fast, smart technology that does more than just sit in a corner and collect dust. Here are four computer-based, cutting edge technologies you can’t live without: 1. Thunderbolt 3 If you’ve purchased or used a new Macbook Pro, you may have noticed the lack of familiar ports and the  addition of a strange, new port  called Thunderbolt 3. You may be wondering what Apple was thinking when they eliminated ...

How to Protect Your Website from Hackers

Image
By Elle Martin How to Protect Your Website from Hackers Hackers are rampant on the internet and it's not unusual for people to get have their websites destroyed because of an attack. While these  cyber attacks  are actually quite common, there are many ways to be able to protect oneself from hackers that roam around the internet. In order to  protect your information from these hackers , you can make use of these tips to beef up your security of your website or your personal accounts. Get a proper web host The first step would be to get a good web host for your website. I know that sometimes it is actually tempting to get the cheaper and less well known web hosts but it will be more expensive in the future when your website gets attacked by some hackers. If you are a user of  Wordpress , one the most recommended servers for you to use would of course be WP Engine since this is the most compatible and most  secured enterprise  solutions  fo...

Computer scientists are developing a ‘master’ fingerprint that could unlock your phone

Image
Computer scientists are developing a ‘master’ fingerprint that could unlock your phone Fingerprint readers, like the TouchID on an iPhone, exist to make your device extra secure while keeping the process of unlocking it easy. Computer scientists at New York University and Michigan State are poised to turn that security benefit on its head. Like a master key that can open any lock, these researchers developed digital “master prints” that could emulate a variety of partial fingerprints enough to hypothetically hack into a device. The researchers wondered if there was a fingerprint equivalent to a common four-digit security code , like “1234.” Using analysis from a digital database, they discovered that, indeed, a master print could successfully mimic a random fingerprint 26 to 65 percent of the time, according to the study. Why such a huge range? It depends on the scale of the fingerprint database; the more partial fingerprints enrolled in a fingerprint sensor system, the grea...

Samsung's new digital assistant, Bixby, tries to push past voice recognition toward true AI

Image
Samsung's new digital assistant, Bixby, tries to push past voice recognition toward true AI Using voice commands with a smartphone is nothing new, but Samsung's new digital assistant, Bixby, goes beyond voice recognition, to incorporate deep learning and expanded visual search to make it feel more like a real digital assistant living in your device. Bixby draws immediate comparisons to Apple's  Siri , and Google's Assistant, but while we often think about those as simply voices, Samsung describes Bixby has its own card-based visual interface to convey information. Voice is just one part of the equation. The other aspects are vision (like using the camera to scan a QR code, find out the cost of a book based on its cover, or translate text), reminders, and recommendations. Bixby is the umbrella term for those four smart functions. Sriram Thodla, a senior director at Samsung focusing on intelligence and the internet of things, introduced Bixby to the public durin...

Google just made the internet a tiny bit less annoying

Image
Google just made the internet a tiny bit less annoying Google wants to make the internet a happier place by taking an irksome security step and— poof! —turning it invisible. Like going through airport security and taking off your shoes, filling out a CAPTCHA field is an annoyance: You have to squint and transcribe distorted letters or numbers to prove you’re not a malicious robot when doing something benign like opening a new email account. Google’s version of this internet time-suck is called reCAPTCHA, the previous iteration of which involves just checking a box that says “I’m not a robot.” But now you might not even have to face the tyranny of clicking that box. On Wednesday, Google launched “ Invisible reCAPTCHA ,” a service that works as a background bot-sniffer—without a human having to do anything. (The beta version launched last November, according to Google.) “Powering these advances is a combination of machine learning and advanced risk analysis that adapt to ne...

Passwords suck, but lip-reading computers won't save us

Image
Passwords suck, but lip-reading computers won't save us Read my lips:  passwords  stink, and you already know all the reasons why. And as part of the quest to replace (or at least strengthen) the act of typing in a traditional password, a computer scientist at Hong Kong Baptist University has proposed using lip movement. The system works by analyzing the lip movement—and even lip shape and texture—of a person speaking a password to make sure he or she is authorized, according to the university. That way, even if the wrong person speaks the right password, access will still be denied. They call it a “lip password.” “The same password spoken by two persons is different, and a learning system can distinguish them,” the lead researcher behind the technology, computer science professor Yiu-ming Cheung, said in a  statement . And because the technology is focused on the person’s lip movement, it could theoretically be used with any language. (Pro tip: Saying your pass...

4D printing makes objects that assemble themselves when heated

Image
4D printing makes objects that assemble themselves when heated By  Alice Klein A new 4D-printing technique that creates complex structures in minutes could be used to make temperature-activated cardiac stents, drug capsules and flat-pack furniture. 4D printing creates 3D objects that  change their shape over time  in response to stimuli such as heat, moisture or light. It is useful for making structures that can adapt to their environment, but is often a laborious process. The most common materials used in 4D printing,  shape-memory polymers , normally require at least five steps to make them into adaptable objects.  Hydrogels  are simpler to use, but too soft to fashion into rigid structures. Zhen Ding  at the Singapore University of Technology and Design and his colleagues have now developed a way to rapidly print rigid 4D objects with a commercial 3D printer and a heat source. They created a variety of objects, including a de...

How Much an Android Developer Costs These Days?

How Much an Android Developer Costs These Days? By Ellie Martin Over  $69 billion  was generated in global mobile app revenue in the year 2015 alone. Some estimates purport that by the year 2020 that number will nearly triple. It would be an understatement to suggest that the (already massive) mobile app market is growing exponentially.  Advancements in both hardware and software  have greatly decreased the cost of powerful smartphones, which has, in turn, caused them to proliferate rather rapidly. As more people use smartphones on an everyday basis, the demand for apps rises. Currently, Android smartphones own the lion’s share of the market. As of Q3 of 2016, Android predominated at an astonishing  86% . To put this number in perspective, iOS devices claim around 18% of the market share. Android smartphones are seemingly ubiquitous, and their domination of the smartphone market suggests an enormous built-in consumer base. What’s more, the number of avai...

A Look at the State of Connected Devices in 2017

A Look at the State of Connected Devices in 2017 By Larry Alton The connected devices trend is one that seems to be growing at a faster rate each year. This calendar year will be no different, as more and more companies continue to get involved. But where exactly do things stand and what can be expected in 2017 and beyond? Where We Currently Stand Depending on which source you reference and the data you choose to highlight, the total number of connected devices worldwide fluctuates rather significantly. However, regardless of the source, one thing always remains consistent: the estimates are massive. According to one resource , the total number of connected devices in 2016 was an estimated 22.9 billion. In 2017, that figure is anticipated to scale to 28.4 billion devices. That’s a year-over-year growth rate of 24 percent. And if you take a step back and look all the way to 2020, experts are calling for more than 50.1 billion connected devices. That’s more than double where w...
